On June 24th 2015 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Public Health signed a written agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the development partners in Vietnam on prevention of drug resistance in Vietnam. The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Public Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, representative of ministries, international partners such as WHO, FAO, USAID, CDC, OUCRU, JICA ... and the embassy of some countries in Vietnam, for example, the embassy of US, UK, Netherlands, Japan, etc... and Hoabinhtourist & Convention which was support unit for that event.
Minister of Public Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien spoke at the signing ceremony
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Public Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien emphasized the advent of antibiotic that was the great turning point in medicine and the use of antibiotic was urgently needed to treat patients. However, using that medicine with inappropriate dose, overuse of antibiotics causes new drug resistances, leading to unexpected results, higher mortality risk. Recently some antibiotic is nascent while antibiotic resistance increasingly.
Therefore, it was necessary to have coordination between ministries, promote drug resistance prevention in Vietnam. Vietnam responded to the call of the WHO "No action today, no cure tomorrow" and built up a national action plan about combating drug resistance in the period from 2013 to 2020 with the aim of promoting the activities for drug resistance prevention, quality and effectiveness improvement of prevention and control of epidemics and health care contributing to care, protection and improvement of people’s health.
These were important and practical activities to boost the fight against drug resistance in Vietnam. Thereby, it raised awareness of community and health officials on drug resistance; strengthened and improved the national surveillance system of antibiotic use and resistance; ensured supplies of qualified drugs that meet the needs of people’s health care, increased use of safe and reasonable drugs; strengthened infection control; nurtured safe rational use of antibiotics in farming and raising livestock, poultry and aquaculture.
